Legendary Singer Zubeen Garg Passes Away At 52: Assam Declares Three-Day State Mourning

The music world and millions of fans are mourning the untimely demise of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away at the age of 52 in Singapore on September 19, 2025. Known for his soulful voice, versatility, and contributions across multiple languages, Zubeen’s death has left a deep void in India’s cultural landscape.

According to reports, the singer was in Singapore to participate in the North East India Festival. On September 19, he went swimming during a yacht trip. Though lifeguards had urged him to wear a life jacket, he reportedly removed it after finding it uncomfortable. Soon after, he was found floating unconscious. Despite immediate rescue efforts and CPR, he was declared dead at Singapore General Hospital.

In the wake of this tragic loss, the Government of Assam has announced a three-day state mourning from September 20 to 22. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that Zubeen’s mortal remains will be brought back to Guwahati, where the public can pay their respects at Sarusajai Stadium before the final rites.

Tributes have poured in from across the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and artists like Papon, Shaan, and Vishal Dadlani expressed their grief, calling Zubeen a voice that transcended boundaries. Fans across Assam and the Northeast gathered in large numbers, lighting candles and singing his songs as a mark of respect.

Zubeen Garg rose to fame with the iconic Bollywood track “Ya Ali” from the film Gangster (2006) and went on to record thousands of songs in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and other languages. His passing marks the end of an era for Assamese music and Indian cinema.

For millions, Zubeen was not just a singer but a cultural icon whose melodies will echo for generations.
